Within the broad spectrum of material specialising in art, the Library covers, specifically, Western art from the Early Middle Ages to the late 20th century. Its wealth derives from the acquisitions made over its hundred-year history through purchase, gift, bequest and exchange.
It currently contains about 105,000 national and international documents on the subjects of art, museology, conservation and restoration, photography, numismatics, archaeology, humanities and local history. This material includes almost 3,000 magazine titles, of which 450 correspond to magazines currently being received.
The Library contains valuable items: artist's books, manuscripts by Catalan artists and art theorists of the 19th and 20th centuries, bindings that come chiefly from the Toda and Maršal de Carvajal bequests, the Riquer acquisition and a total of some 4,000 volumes on a variety of subjects, published before 1900, among which there are some incunabula. Along with these works, important material from the Modernista period, Noucentisme and the avant-garde is conserved.
From the start, the Library established a bibliographic exchange with national and international institutions in the same field, mutually enriching the collections and establishing a privileged avenue of collaboration and knowledge. This avenue of exchange makes the Library one of the instruments most important for the consolidation of the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya
